The WHO reports that “vision, the most dominant of our senses, is vital at every turn of our lives yet it is overlooked worldwide and often untreated. Vision loss is often associated with various negative health outcomes and poor quality of life, with lifelong consequences.

For example, young children with early onset severe vision loss can experience delayed motor, language, emotional, social and cognitive development. If a child has vision loss, this can really impact their educational outcomes, contribute to low self-esteem and future socio-economic potential.

Globally, at least 450 million children have a sight condition that needs treatment, with 90 million children living with sight loss, which can have long-lasting consequences including learning difficulties, reduced educational outcomes and employment opportunities and poor social interaction. Blindness in childhood is particularly concerning, as many disorders leading to impairment are preventable.

Myopia (short-sightedness) is the most common eye condition affecting children and is rapidly growing in prevalence across the world. However, the prevalence of myopia in children is rapidly increasing in many parts of the world.

In India, one in four children in cities and one in seven in villages are wearing spectacles. Earlier, this problem started in children at the age of 12 to 13 years and the number of glasses remained fine till the age of 18-19. Now children have started having this problem at an early age.

The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated this – myopia progression among older schoolchildren increased by 1.5 times since COVID-19 began. The rate of myopia varies considerably within and between regions, but in 2020, 60% of children in Asia and 40% of children in Europe had myopia.

When it comes to optimal vision development, nutrition is the most crucial factor. Childhood supplementation of various macro & micronutrients, along with phytonutrients (plant based nutrients), were found to be particularly effective in improving vision. 

The supplementation of such nutrients to young children, especially the ones suffering from nutrient deficiencies, will provide them with necessary resources for vision development during their growth years.
