India is also facing the double burden of malnutrition, with 38% undernutrition (46.6 million) in children under the age of five and about 15% obesity and overweight (14.4 million).
Protein is essential for a child's development, playing a role in building muscle, brain development, and the immune system. However, a large percentage of Indian children don't get enough protein in their diet. A mixed diet can meet a child's protein needs if protein contributes to around 10% of their total calories, but the usual sources of protein in a regular diet, don't provide enough. For example, to get the daily requirement of 60 grams of protein, a child would need to drink 7–8 glasses of milk or eat eight bowls of lentils.
